Also, the “threshold of new recordings required on an eligible album is lowered from 75 per cent to 66 per cent to reduce the exclusion of entries that are widely recognised throughout the music industry as new albums.”

This will give newer artists a fourth shot at nabbing their first Grammy Award, widening the door for some fresh talent.

The lower threshold also puts artists with more new songs on their albums in a better position than those who include many remixes or live versions on their records, which previously met the 75 per cent threshold.

Additionally, contributors to winning albums in most genre album categories will now be awarded Grammy statuettes and Achievement Certificates, along with producers and engineers, who already receive them.

On top of that, five new categories have been added to the mix, expanding the talent pool for the decades-old awards.

These include Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album, and Best Latin Song.

A complete list of changes for the awards can be found in the Grammys’ rule book on its website, including updates to the voting process and eligibility.

Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. also addressed the updates in a Q&A posted to the website.

When speaking about the extension of the Best New Artist eligibility period, he wrote, “We’ve heard from the music community that the way artists are being developed is changing, and the time it’s taking to find success or recognition can take longer than it once did.

“Artists are often releasing more music before they actually break through the consciousness of consumers or of our voters, and that evolution directly impacts this Category.”

Harvey continued, “Last year, we formed a Best New Artist task force and charged them with reviewing the current guidelines and Category description to determine if anything needed to be refreshed or changed.

“That task force met, discussed, deliberated, and convened artists, and they came to the table with recommendations, which is what you’re seeing implemented this year.

“The changes that have been made to this Category will allow for a little bit more flexibility and reflect the reality that artist development looks different than it did even a few years ago.

“Again, it all goes back to making sure our process is reflective of what’s happening in our industry today,” he concluded.

Nominees for the 69th Annual Grammy Awards will be officially announced on November 16.

The February 2027 show will also mark the first time the ceremony won’t be broadcast on CBS after a historic 54-year run.

The Recording Academy revealed in late 2024 that it had made a 10-year broadcast agreement with a new network

Despite its longtime partnership with CBS, the academy opted to part ways after the expiration of a 10-year contract, originally penned in 2016.

After extensive negotiations, both parties failed to agree on financial terms and the show’s future vision, prompting the decision.

In October 2024, the academy revealed it had brokered a deal with Walt Disney Company, driven by the desire for broader distribution and modernisation.

The blockbuster deal was valued at roughly $500 million.

As a result, the ceremony will air exclusively on ABC and stream on Hulu and Disney+ until 2036.

ABC previously broadcast the Grammys before CBS took over in 1973.

NBC originally aired the ceremony for its first 12 years, beginning in 1959.
